Scope and Content

A colourful paperback saddle stitched (stapled) book. Contains still images from from an animated film "Scrubbing in Silence", made by the artist for her degree show in Limerick School of Art and Design. Her work was inspired by a Magdalene Laundry in the college grounds that was in operation until 1990, in particular the decorative grates at the base of the building.

"Scrubbing in Silence is a 35mm positive slide film animation using a process of painting on, scanning and removing ink. This process highlights the removing and washing process done by women in the laundries at the time. The audio of washing and scrubbing recreates the atmosphere of back breaking work these women had to endure. As well as the purpose, to ‘wash away their sins’. They also had to work in silence most of the time from day to night. The bright colours hint at the recovery of this building though the art college. The layer technique also highlights the hidden history and the hidden feature itself. The grates have always stayed the same but the inhabitants of the building are forever changing." https://www.claramcsweeneyart.com/work/whispering-truths-26-grates-abpr8
