Scope and Content
Murphy-Devitt Studios was formed in about 1960 by John A. (Dessie) Devitt with stained glass artists John Murphy and his wife RóisÃn Dowd Murphy. John and Dessie had worked at Harry Clarke's Stained Glass Studios in Dublin. They set up their own first studio in a mews in Monkstown, Co. Dublin and carried out many stained glass commissions over these first few years: examples are in Mayfield, Cork and St. Bridget's, The Curragh, Co. Kildare.
In the late 1960s they moved a few miles to Blackrock in Co. Dublin where they had a purpose-built studio. Among the works carried out over the years are Galway Cathedral; The Church of the Holy Spirit, Ballyroan, Dublin; The Church of the Resurrection, Mallow; St. Michael's Church, Dunlaoghaire, Co. Dublin to name but a few. In about 1980 the studio closed but John, RóisÃn and Dessie continued to work together. RóisÃn's final commission was for St. Peter's Cathedral in her native Belfast in about 2004 where she provided a Resurrection window while in her 80s. John, RóisÃn and Dessie all died in 2006.
