NIVAL works to the benefit of artists by providing a secure and permanent place for the deposit of visual and textual information related to their careers, and artists often ask how they could develop their own archives. Dr Alessia Cargnelli’s 2023 project, Archiving Plurality, foregrounded the idea that to tackle inequality of representation, it is imperative to give agency to artists and provide them with tools to directly shape how they would like to be remembered. With all of this in mind, NIVAL has now developed a Toolkit for Artists’ Archiving with practical steps and prompts to help artists of any level of experience or background to gather and organise their own documentation at home or in the studio.

This toolkit was developed with the assistance of a focus group of practitioners from all over Ireland who have approached archiving their own documentation in a variety of ways. The in-house staff at NIVAL and Regional Collectors – who have decades of combined experience in collecting and organising the stories of Ireland’s artists – have also contributed their top tips and advice to help smooth the process of self-documentation.

NIVAL’s Toolkit for Artists’ Archiving and our cataloguing template are available to download for free. Sign up to NIVAL’s mailing list to hear more about the toolkit and future events and workshops.
