Terms of Use
When visiting NIVAL’s Reading Room and engaging with the materials in our collections, we ask researchers to observe our handling guidelines and terms of use.
- All researchers must register on arrival.
- No foods or liquids are permitted in the Reading Room.
- Please ensure your hands are washed and free from any creams and sanitizer.
- Only pencils may be used for taking notes.
- Electronic devices may be used to take notes.
- Archival material cannot be removed from the Reading Room.
- All documents should be viewed flat on the table surface.
- Archive material should remain in its arrangement. Please do not rearrange files. Ask for assistance if documents become mixed up.
- Only view one folder at a time. Multiple folders should not be opened.
- Researchers must comply with directions from NIVAL staff regarding handling guidelines. Staff are happy to provide guidance.
- If requested to wear gloves, please do not touch your face or hair.
- Books and volumes should be viewed flat or using the cushion or cradle provided. Please follow any specific instructions from staff.
- Pages should be turned from the edge or corner.
- Photographs should only be touched on the sides or edge. Please do not touch the image directly.
- Charcoal drawings should not be directly touched.
- Do not remove archive material from their polyester sleeves.
- Do not lean on or hover cameras over archive material.
- No photocopying of archive material is permitted.
- Photographs, without flash may be taken for reference purposes only.
- Researchers will be held responsible for any copyright infringements. Please talk to NIVAL staff or email nivalinfo@ncad.ie if you would like a high-resolution scan of an item for a thesis, artwork, exhibition, publication or other public-facing piece of work. Further conditions apply to the reproduction of materials from NIVAL.
- Researchers must respect the security of all personal data contained within the collection and treat it in accordance with the law. The use of contact details found in the collections is prohibited. Researchers should consult with NIVAL staff to request that an approach would be made on their behalf. Researchers must seek approval from a member of staff for the reuse of personal data for specified purposes.
