A guide to citation

A useful guide on how to credit materials from NIVAL’s collections.

When you visit NIVAL, you are permitted to take your own reference photos (without flash) for personal research. NCAD students and staff: Please note that photocopying of collection materials is not permitted.

If you are interested in including images as part of your thesis, artwork, exhibition, publication or other public-facing work, please read our Reproduction Policy information here. NIVAL will provide required citations for any approved reproduction requests.

Collection Citations

While NIVAL provides public access to collection materials, NIVAL does not hold copyright over most of the materials. Research materials should always be credited with details of the author, title, publisher, institution and any other relevant information. NIVAL follows the Harvard style guide for citation. Research materials accessed in NIVAL can be cited as follows:

Special collection material

Item title or description, year if known. Photograph by First name Surname. Collection title, National Irish Visual Arts Library (NIVAL), NCAD, Dublin.

Item of ephemera (invite, press release, unpublished catalogue or brochure, etc.)

Author (Surname, Initial), year of publication. Title or other description. Collection name, date accessed. National Irish Visual Arts Library (NIVAL), NCAD, Dublin.

e.g. Rubicon Gallery, 2002. Invitation to John Graham exhibition. Artist & Designer Files, accessed 12 June 2009. National Irish Visual Arts Library (NIVAL), NCAD, Dublin.

Newspaper article (if retrieved from NIVAL file)

Author (Surname, Initial), year of publication. Title of article. Title of newspaper, day and month. Collection (or file) name, date accessed. National Irish Visual Arts Library (NIVAL), NCAD, Dublin.

e.g. Fallon, B., 1987. A bad year for Irish sculpture. The Irish Times, 16 March. Irish Sculpture general file, accessed 12 June 2009. National Irish Visual Arts Library (NIVAL), NCAD, Dublin.

Book

Author (Surname, Initial), year of publication. Title, edition (if not the first). Place of publication: Publisher.

e.g. Jarman, N., 1997. Material Conflicts. Oxford: Berg.

Contribution in a book

Contributing author (Surname, Initial), year of publication. Title of contribution. [Followed by] In: Surname, Initial [of author or editor of publication, followed by], ed. [or eds., if relevant]. Title of book. Place of publication: publisher, page number(s).

e.g. McGonagle, D., 2006. Myths and mind-sets, or how can we be real? In Wyndham, A. Higgins, ed. Re-imagining Ireland. Charlottesville, VA: University of Virginia Press, 112-22.

Article in a journal

Author (Surname, Initial), year of publication. Title of article. Title of journal, volume number and (part number), page numbers.

e.g. Kelly, N.A., 1999. Displaying national identity in museum collections. Irish Studies Review, 14 (2), 102-111.
