A guide to copyright and citation

A useful guide to copyright permissions and how to credit materials from NIVAL’s collections.
When you visit NIVAL, you are permitted to take your own reference photos (without flash) for personal research. If you are an NCAD student or staff member, it is important to note that we do not allow original collection materials to be photocopied.
If you would like to include images as part of your thesis, artwork, exhibition, publication or other public-facing work, please let NIVAL staff know during your appointment (or email nivalinfo@ncad.ie) and we will work with you to provide high-resolution scans where possible. NIVAL provides public access to materials in our collections but does not hold the copyright. All collections are subject to copyright permissions and it is the researcher’s responsibility to seek permission for these reproductions from the copyright-holder.
NIVAL prioritises that artists’ work in our collections should be viewed as they envisaged – this means that we do not provide reproductions where the image will be distorted or modified beyond the artist’s intention.
All provided copies must be destroyed by the applicant after the agreed use. Storing, duplicating and/or sharing of the provided copy via email, cloud storage or any other means constitutes a misuse.
Citation
Copies should always be credited with details of the author, title, publisher, institution and any other relevant information. NIVAL follows the Harvard style guide for citation.
